Medical Training Review Panel: fifteenth report
The fifteenth report of the Medical Training Review Panel (MTRP) covers the three levels of medical training in Australia, providing data on all trainees in undergraduate, postgraduate and vocational training programs in the last year, 2011.
It also provides information on graduates and college fellows for the previous year, 2010. Additional information on doctors who were trained overseas and the countries in which they undertook their studies, who applied to and those who have been granted visas to work in Australia, are also included to provide a more complete picture of the supply of medical practitioners.
For the first time a full set of tables on basic training has been included, providing information by medical specialties and state and territory for all trainees, commencing and female trainees, as well as an examination of the trends over the last five years and data on these back to 2000. A set of new extended data trend tables on domestic and international commencing medical students by university and state and territory from 2005-2011 are also included. Vocational training data include separate data on a new speciality area of Sports and exercise medicine.
The data for the report was provided by the Medical Deans Australia and New Zealand Inc (MDANZ), state and territory health departments, medical colleges, General Practice Education and Training Limited (GPET), the Australian Medical Council, the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing and the Australian Government Department of Immigration and Citizenship.
Given the differing collection methodologies for different data, the year for which data are reported varies. The majority of the data presented in the report is for 2011, with most data reported at 30 June 2011. The exceptions are data on medical graduates, college examinations and college fellows, which are for the previous calendar year, 2010. Where possible, time series data have been included as an appendix to the report dating back to 1997, the first year in which the MTRP reported.
Further information on medical college training processes and requirements and data specifications are also appended.
